The cold and damp weather conditions prevailing on Sunday, 7th March, did nothing to hinder a large number of runners and walkers, most of them women, to participate in the first alli Women’s Day Fun Run/Walk organised by the Maltese Olympic Committee in conjunction with Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club, at Qawra. Participants were treated to a host of stands put up by the various event’s sponsors within the foyer of the Dolmen Hotel. Notwithstanding the howling wind and the dribbling rain Birkirkara St. Joseph managed to put up a colourful and lively event hub, including a platform for Club Coach Isabelle Zarb to conduct a couple of aerobics warm-up sessions for both the walkers and the joggers.
Both the run and the walk were held on the Qawra front, the former on a distance of 5K, while the walk covered 2.8K. It was a first time experience for a large number of the participants to be walking or jogging in such a large group, with race numbers stuck to their backs (the time-keepers had a nightmare trying to register the finishers and their times!). However fun was had by one and all, to the extent that a proposal for the event to be held again in 2011, is already under discussion.
