DONALD SPITERI
SPORTS MASSEUR THERAPIST

As a Sports Masseur Therapist my aim is to help athletes to prevent sports injuries in order to achieve their optimum level of training. With the help of modern stretching techniques such as Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) and Muscle Energy Techniques (MET), the athlete will increase flexibility in both muscles and joints. Techniques such as Soft Tissue Release (STR) and Connective Tissue Massage (CTM) help to release fluids trapped and releasing adhesions or stickiness in muscle fibres. These techniques are beneficial when an athlete has extremely tender and tight muscles.

Sports massage can be part of a warm up for an event and wind down after the event to release tension and lactic acid from the muscles. It can be part of a rehabilitation process to treat injury or it can be used as part of a training programme. The benefits of sports massage are:

  • Pre-event sport massages help to warm up muscles by stretching them and making them more flexible; improve circulation to the muscles; decrease muscle tension and prepare the athlete even psychological readiness.
  • Post-event massages help to loosen tired stiff muscles and promotes blood flow to the muscles. Psychologically, it promotes relaxation which is what it is needed after a hard work- out.
  • Maintenance sports massages are usually done once every two or three weeks. These massages help to keep the athletes flexible and provide them with some degree of pain relief resulting from intensive training.

Athletes who are looking to improve performances and increase their competitive edge do so by adopting Sports Massage Therapy as part of their training routine to enhance their skills, strength, stamina suppleness, speed and flexibility. After some regular visits you will definitely notice the improvement in your field.
